Brief Session Description : The intention of this session is to educate on precision medicine, with a focus on cytochrome P450 metabolism and CYP2D6 pathway. This metabolic pathway converts many opioid medications to active metabolites; however, some people are super metabolizers or are on medication which blocks this metabolic pathway (such as SSRIs). This results in persistent pain, despite escalating dose. Recognizing these interactions early can lead to earlier medication adjustment, improve patient satisfaction, outcomes, and ability to participate in therapy. Finally, use of the electronic health record, clinical decision support systems and predictive analytics for patient response will be discussed.
