Dr. Ana Valeria Aguirre-Guemez did her medical training at “Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)” in Mexico City, and completed her residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and a fellowship in Neurological Rehabilitation at the National Institute of Health for Rehabilitation “Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación LGII (INR LGII)” in Mexico City. After her residency she worked for five years at the Spinal Cord Unit of the INR LGII as an attendant while she was also engaged in research activities. In 2021 she started working at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, where she is currently a Research Fellow. She has authored and co-authored manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and contributes as reviewer for peer-reviewed journals. She has presented nationally and internationally on clinical areas related to the assessment and training of trunk control and training to improve gait in SCI, better ways to improve cardiovascular function in SCI patients, the assessment and safety of procedures to improve urinary health in SCI, and in the development of an integral rehabilitation program to improve upper extremity function in SCI. Dr. Aguirre is a certified member of the PM&R board in Mexico, member of the “Sociedad de Medicina Física y Rehabilitación” from México, member of ASIA, and member of the Americas committee (ASIA). She is currently the PI of “Validating the Jiddu Analyzer for Urine Bacterial Growth in Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction” and a co-PI for an Early Career Partnering PI Project (DoD): “Use a Patient-Focused Drug Development framework to determine patient preferences regarding intravesical therapeutics for LUTS and UTI at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital”.
