Dr. James McDeavitt is the Executive Vice President and Dean of Clinical Affairs at Baylor College of Medicine, a role he has held since 2014. He earned his B.S. from Duke University in 1982 and his M.D. from Wake Forest University in 1986. After an internship in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, he spent a year as a primary care physician in rural Guatemala. He later completed specialty training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Medicine.
Prior to joining Baylor, Dr. McDeavitt spent 23 years with Carolinas HealthCare System (now Atrium Health), where he served as Chief Academic Officer and Senior Vice President for Education and Research. He oversaw undergraduate and graduate medical education, research, allied health training, and continuing medical education, leading a major expansion of the system’s academic mission. He also served as the founding associate dean for the Charlotte campus of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. McDeavitt has held leadership roles in organizations such as the Brain Injury Association, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, and the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
At Baylor, Dr. McDeavitt oversees all aspects of the College’s clinical mission and manages relationships with its hospital and health system affiliates. Baylor faculty physicians provide care for nearly half of the Texas Medical Center’s inpatients, the world’s la rgest medical center. He works to foster partnerships that align with Baylor’s goal of becoming a nation-leading Learning Health System.
