This study aims to determine the prevalence, the risk factors, and the treatment of NUTIs in the rehabilitation unit of university hospital of Sahloul.
Design:
It’s a cross sectional study about patients hospitalized from august to November of 2022 in the rehabilitation unit of University hospital of Sahloul in Sousse that presented a NUTI.
Results:
In our study of 20 participants, 40% were males and 60% were females.
Most patients (55%) were transferred from another department to the rehabilitation unit, 35% were admitted directly to our unitand 10% were referred from another hospital.
We received 30% of the patients from the orthopedics unit, 15% from the general surgery unit, 5% from the neurosurgery unit, 15% from the cardiology unit and 5% from the internal medecine department. Urinary tract instrumentation can be considered as a risk factor as half of our patients had a urinary catheter and 20 % had an intermittent catherization.
All of our patients were urine culture and sensitivity positive.
We found 7 different germs in the urinary tract, the most common was the Klebsiella pneumoniae in 40% of the cases, followed by Escherichia coli (25%). 80% of our patients had fever, 60% had urinary signs, and 80% had a biological inflammatory syndrome.
Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that urinary tract infections are prevalent among catheterized patients, particularly those transferred from surgical departments. Females were found to be at a higher risk compared to males. Klebsiella pneumoniae was more frequently associated with urinary tract infections.
