716 - The new pattern of a thumb spica orthosis

Objectives: To present a new pattern of thumb spica that saves time and cost-effectiveness.

Design:

Materials

-  4” x 5” thermoplastic 1/12” or 1/8” thickness (depending on hand size and severity)

-  Velcro loop

-  Velcro hook

Method


  1.  After measuring rectangle piece, mark the dot at the middle of wide side and measure length from MCP to IP joint of thumb then draw straight line from the dot to opposite side. 

  2. Cut along the line and divide the rectangle into two parts except for part of thumb area.

  3. Soften the splint material and mold around the thumb first. Place V-shape at 1st web space, position thumb in palmar abduction and opposition. The upper part of the rectangle covers dorsal of hand, the other part support arch of hand.                       

  4. Cut the excessive part at the ulnar side both dorsal and volar hand parts.

  5.  Finish by Velcro ulnar side of both dorsal and volar parts.



Results:

We have tried this new thumb spica pattern for many cases and found out that it was very easy to mold and set position, also needed not much skill to handle splint material too.

Conclusions:

New pattern of thumb spica was designed to help therapist to spend time effectively while making splints especially drawing a pattern and setting a position.
