PM&R is a specialty focused on restoring functional ability, decreasing pain and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with physical impairments or disabilities. Unfortunately, in some healthcare systems PM&R is widely underutilized. This may be due to limited awareness and understanding, lack of resources, and a focus on curative and emergency care. The idea behind this project is to articulate the pivotal role of PM&R services in improving patient outcomes across the continuum of care. There are many barriers to the effective integration of PM&R services within current system-based practices and our goal is to develop strategies to integrate our services effectively into interdisciplinary patient care plans.
Design: A presentation will be created with key aspects of PM&R along with an educational video series. After creation of this video, it will be available for groups of healthcare professionals. The presentation will include questions pertaining to the knowledge of, attitude towards, and practice of PM&R. This survey will be taken prior to and after the presentation to demonstrate the effectiveness of this presentation. By the end of this presentation, the audience should learn the role of PM&R in the hospital system, along with learning the immense scope of practice that physiatrists display, specifically in the acute care setting.
Results: This is a research study that is being prepared.
Conclusions: The goal of this project is to spread awareness of the pivotal role PM&R can take in every hospital system. We hope to explain that PM&R is a specialty that allows collaboration amongst other disciplines including therapy, nursing and case management. We can help bridge the gap to the patient's new normal post-hospitalization. We hope to explain the importance of consulting PM&R in the acute care setting to help facilitate proper management. Lastly, we hope to show the broad capability we have as physiatrists.
